Where Does Veronica Ruiz Breaks the Bank Fit?

Veronica Ruiz Breaks the Bank is the one spot in the Finlay Donovan reading order that can be a little confusing.

It’s a short story about Vero, and it was published after Finlay Donovan Jumps the Gun. Read it there, between Book 3 and Finlay Donovan Rolls the Dice.

You don’t need it to understand the first three novels. But Vero becomes more important as the series goes, so the short story is worth reading before you get much deeper into the later books.

Do You Need to Read Finlay Donovan Books in Order?

Yes. Read the Finlay Donovan books in order.

The series is funny and fast, but it’s more connected than a loose, case-of-the-week mystery series. Finlay’s family life, her writing career, her relationship with Vero, her romantic mess, and the larger crime trouble all keep moving forward.

Starting later would spoil earlier books, and it would make some of the ongoing chaos feel thinner than it should. The first book sets up the mess. The later books keep stacking consequences on top of it.

Is Finlay Donovan Mystery or Thriller?

I’d call Finlay Donovan a mystery first.

The books have thriller pieces: danger, criminals, mob trouble, bodies, threats, and plenty of panic. Still, the main appeal is comic mystery. Finlay is an amateur sleuth who keeps getting dragged into crimes while trying to keep her regular life from falling apart.

More specifically, the series fits best with funny, character-driven amateur sleuth mysteries.

Finlay Donovan TV Adaptation

Finlay Donovan Is Killing It is in development as a Peacock TV series, with Tina Fey and Lang Fisher attached.

There isn’t a cast list or release date yet. If the adaptation news is what brought you here, start with Book 1. That’s where Finlay, Vero, and the whole disaster begin.
