Star Wars Legends Books in Order: Timeline & Release Order

When I want a list of the Star Wars Legends books in order, I want the old Expanded Universe timeline without Disney canon titles mixed in. I want Luke’s post-Return of the Jedi story, the original Thrawn trilogy, Mara Jade, Jacen and Jaina Solo, the New Jedi Order, Darth Bane, the Old Republic, and the weird, messy, deeply loved EU all in one place.

This list is for the Legends stories you’d actually sit down and read: the main novels, movie novelizations, story collections, junior novels, and younger-reader series. I’m leaving out comics, art books, RPG guides, reference books, visual dictionaries, gamebooks, picture-book readers, and other non-story extras.

Where to Start with Star Wars Legends Books

The hardest part of Legends isn’t finding enough books. It’s deciding where to begin without turning reading into homework.

Chronological order is useful once you know you want the whole timeline, but I don’t think it’s the best first move for most readers. Starting at the absolute beginning drops you into Dawn of the Jedi, then the Old Republic, then Darth Bane. That’s fun if ancient Jedi and Sith history is your thing, but it’s a long road before you get anywhere near Luke, Leia, Han, Mara Jade, or the post-movie EU most people are usually curious about.

  • Best classic starting point: Heir to the Empire by Timothy Zahn. This is where I’d send most new Legends readers first.
  • Best Old Republic starting point: Revan by Drew Karpyshyn. Start here if you love Knights of the Old Republic and Sith/Jedi history.
  • Best Sith starting point: Path of Destruction by Drew Karpyshyn. It explains the Rule of Two and gives you one of the cleanest Sith stories in Legends.
  • Best prequel-era starting point: Darth Plagueis by James Luceno. It’s dense, but it’s one of the most important books for the political and Sith side of the prequel era.
  • Best younger-reader starting point: Young Jedi Knights: Heirs of the Force by Kevin J. Anderson and Rebecca Moesta. Start here if you want Jacen, Jaina, and the next generation of Jedi before the New Jedi Order.
  • Best big commitment: Vector Prime by R. A. Salvatore. This starts the New Jedi Order, which is a 19-book arc and probably the most ambitious post-Return of the Jedi Legends storyline.

Star Wars Legends Books in Publication Order

Chronological order shows the in-universe timeline. Publication order shows the old Expanded Universe as readers met it in real time, from the earliest tie-in novels through the Bantam years, the Del Rey years, the New Jedi Order, and the final Legends novels before the 2014 canon reset.

This list uses the original first-publication year, not modern ebook or Legends-banner reprint dates.

What Does Star Wars Legends Mean?

Star Wars Legends is the name Lucasfilm uses for the older Expanded Universe stories that were published before the current canon timeline took over. That includes decades of novels, comics, games, guidebooks, and other material that built out Star Wars long before the sequel trilogy existed.

In April 2014, Lucasfilm announced that the old Expanded Universe would continue under the Star Wars Legends banner, while the movies, The Clone Wars, and future stories would form the new official canon. That’s why Legends has major storylines that don’t match Disney-era canon.

The biggest difference shows up after Return of the Jedi. In Legends, Luke rebuilds the Jedi Order, Han and Leia have children named Jacen, Jaina, and Anakin Solo, Mara Jade becomes a major character, and the galaxy eventually faces the Yuuzhan Vong invasion. None of that is the current official canon timeline, but it’s still a huge part of Star Wars publishing history.

Star Wars Legends Books FAQ

Are Star Wars Legends books still worth reading?

Yes. They’re not the current official canon, but that doesn’t make them pointless. Some of the best Star Wars novels ever published are Legends books, especially the Thrawn trilogy, the Darth Bane trilogy, the X-Wing books, and the New Jedi Order.

Should I read Star Wars Legends books in chronological order?

You can, but I wouldn’t make chronological order your first rule if you’re new. I’d start with a strong entry point like Heir to the Empire, Path of Destruction, or Darth Plagueis, then use the chronological list once you know which era you care about most.

Are Legends books the same as Star Wars EU books?

Yes, for most readers. EU means Expanded Universe, which is what fans usually called the old Star Wars publishing timeline before Lucasfilm rebranded it as Legends. So when someone says Star Wars EU books in order, they usually mean Star Wars Legends books in order.

Are Star Wars Legends books canon?

No. Legends books are not part of the current official canon timeline. They’re still licensed Star Wars stories, but they belong to the older Expanded Universe continuity.

Where should I go after the Thrawn trilogy?

If you want the main post-Return of the Jedi path, I’d go from the Thrawn trilogy into the Jedi Academy trilogy, then keep moving toward the Hand of Thrawn and the New Jedi Order. If you want something different, jump backward to X-Wing, Darth Bane, or the Old Republic.
