What Order Should I Read Star Wars Books?

We’re about to dive into the two different ways you can read the Star Wars books in order, but first it may be helpful to know which reading order will be best for you.

If you have never read the Star Wars books before, the best way to read the Star Wars books in order is by following the chronological order. The story starts all the way back more than 20,000 years before A New Hope, although there are books that exist that are written more than a few hundred years in the past.

Those early, early books won’t resemble the Jedi and Sith personas you’ve come to know from the films, but reading the Star Wars books in order will allow you to understand the foundations on which the religion of the Force was founded.

The other reading orders we have included here include by time period, which provides the distinction between Canon and Legend, as well as by series. The separation of Canon vs. Legend is important for any fan to understand the history of the older publications. The order by series is a useful resource if you have an interest in a particular character or author.

What is the oldest Star Wars book?

There are two answers to this question depending on your frame of reference. If you’re looking for the oldest Star Wars book meaning chronologically taking place at the earliest point in time, then Dawn of The Jedi: Into the Void by Tim Lebbon is the oldest Star Wars book.

It takes place in 25,793 BBY. The earliest novel in the Star Wars timeline delves deep into the origins of the Jedi order.

However, the oldest Star Wars book in our timeline would mean the first Star Wars book to be published. That would be the novelization of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope in 1976, a year before the movie’s release.

The original title of this book was Star Wars: From the Adventures of Luke Skywalker. The author attribution of the novel is given to George Lucas, but it is widely known to have been ghostwritten by Alan Dean Foster.

Very shortly after, Foster then wrote the oldest standalone Star Wars novel which is Splinter of the Mind’s Eye. It was published in 1978.

Canon vs. Legend

One of the most confusing things about the Star Wars books is all this talk about Canon vs. Legend. To help you get it all clear, let’s take a second and clarify the differences between the two.

The legend books and comics are all the books published before Disney acquired Star Wars in 2012. For example, the New Jedi Order books or the Thrawn trilogy. All these stories follow an alternate timeline in which the First Order and Kylo Ren did not exist.

If you are shopping for Star Wars books in a physical shop, please note that the Legend books are smaller in size than canon books. Also, all legend books are printed with a gold banner across the top of the front cover that says Legends to help you differentiate from the canon novels.

The Canon books and comics include everything published since 2014 and any Star Wars novel released moving forward. These books follow the same timeline as the Skywalker Saga.
