The Holly Gibney Books in Order begin with Mr. Mercedes, not Holly. I recommend publication order: the Bill Hodges trilogy, The Outsider, the title novella in If It Bleeds, Holly, and Never Flinch.
That’s six novels and one novella following Stephen King’s private investigator. The cases mix crime, psychological suspense, and supernatural horror, while Holly’s friendships and confidence develop across the books.

Holly Gibney Books in Order
Read the books in this order for Holly’s full story. The first three make up the Bill Hodges trilogy; End of Watch ends that trilogy, not Holly’s appearances.

The shorter entry, If It Bleeds, is a novella inside a four-novella collection with the same title. Only that title story belongs in Holly’s reading order. You don’t need to read the collection’s other three stories to continue with Holly.
The Bill Hodges Trilogy
Mr. Mercedes introduces retired detective Bill Hodges, who receives a taunting message from the killer behind an unsolved vehicle attack. Holly enters his life during the investigation, alongside another important recurring character, Jerome Robinson.
Finders Keepers gives the group a case involving a murdered novelist, stolen manuscripts, and a teenager who finds more than he bargained for. Its opening reaches back into the past, but I wouldn’t move it ahead of Mr. Mercedes. The investigators’ relationships pick up after the first book.
End of Watch completes the Bill Hodges trilogy and brings an overt supernatural threat into the investigation. These aren’t three interchangeable detective adventures. My advice is to keep them together, then continue with Holly’s later cases.
Older announcements called End of Watch The Suicide Prince. That was a working title, not another installment. Likewise, buying the Bill Hodges trilogy covers the first three entries above, not the entire Holly reading order.
The Outsider, Holly, and Never Flinch
The Outsider begins with Detective Ralph Anderson investigating a child’s murder. Evidence points to one man, but his alibi creates a seemingly impossible contradiction. Holly becomes involved in the case, and the novel refers back to major developments in the Bill Hodges books. I’d finish the trilogy before starting it to avoid those spoilers.
After The Outsider and the If It Bleeds novella, Holly gives the detective a missing-person investigation of her own. Penny Dahl hires her to find her daughter, Bonnie, whose disappearance leads Holly toward a pair of elderly professors.
You can follow the central mystery in Holly without reading all five earlier entries. I’d consider it a reasonable starting point for someone interested in that particular case, but not the best choice for discovering Holly’s history without spoilers.
In Never Flinch, Holly takes a bodyguard assignment protecting a speaker from a stalker while Detective Izzy Jaynes faces a threat to kill fourteen people. It follows Holly in publication order and continues the character’s work as a private investigator.
We Think Not and Always Holly were working titles used while King developed Never Flinch. They aren’t two additional published novels to add to the list.
The If It Bleeds Collection
The If It Bleeds collection contains four separate novellas: “Mr. Harrigan’s Phone,” “The Life of Chuck,” “If It Bleeds,” and “Rat.” Holly appears in “If It Bleeds,” not throughout the collection.
Her investigation begins when she notices something troubling about a television news report covering a school bombing. The case draws on her experience with the unusual events of The Outsider, which is why this story belongs after that novel.
For a Holly-focused read, I’d go straight to the title novella and save the other stories for whenever they interest you. Don’t count the collection and its title story as two Holly entries. They represent the same appearance.

Holly has two distinct television portrayals: Justine Lupe in Mr. Mercedes and Cynthia Erivo in The Outsider. The adaptations don’t change the recommended book sequence.
Mr. Mercedes
Mr. Mercedes ran for three seasons from 2017 to 2019. Brendan Gleeson plays Bill Hodges, with Justine Lupe as Holly. The series draws from all three Bill Hodges novels, rather than adapting only the book that shares its title.
There’s an important ordering difference: season one adapts Mr. Mercedes, season two draws primarily from End of Watch, and season three uses Finders Keepers. I’d read the trilogy before watching beyond the first season, rather than matching book two to season two.
The Outsider
HBO’s The Outsider is a ten-episode adaptation released in 2020. Ben Mendelsohn plays Ralph Anderson, and Cynthia Erivo plays Holly. It adapts the novel’s murder investigation, not the If It Bleeds novella or the novel Holly.
Although the shows cast Holly differently, the books follow the same character from Mr. Mercedes onward. I wouldn’t treat either screen portrayal as a substitute for the earlier novels when deciding where to begin reading.
Jack Bender also announced plans for a television adaptation of Holly at the 2023 Printers Row Lit Fest. That is an announced project, not a released adaptation.

Stephen King was born in Portland, Maine, in 1947. His first published novel, Carrie, appeared in 1974, and his fiction spans horror, suspense, fantasy, and crime. Mr. Mercedes won the Edgar Award for Best Novel.
King originally intended Holly to have a small supporting role in Mr. Mercedes. Instead, she became a recurring character and eventually the lead in her own investigations. That change explains why her story begins in a trilogy named for someone else.
