Gray Man Books in Order: Mark Greaney’s Court Gentry Series

Looking for the Gray Man books in order? Mark Greaney’s Court Gentry series is best read in publication order, starting with The Gray Man and continuing through The Hard Line.

The series follows Court Gentry, a former CIA operative and assassin whose past keeps catching up with him. The books move fast, but the relationships, betrayals, and fallout build over time, so reading the Gray Man series in order is the cleanest way to follow Court’s story.

Do You Need to Read the Gray Man Books in Order?

Yes, I’d read the Gray Man books in order. Each book has its own mission, so you won’t be completely lost if you start in the middle, but Court’s CIA history, friendships, enemies, and alliances carry across the series.

The Gray Man is the right starting point. Sierra Six digs into Court’s earlier career, but it still works better once you know who Court has become.

The Gray Man Netflix Adaptation

Netflix released The Gray Man in 2022, with Ryan Gosling as Sierra Six/Court Gentry, Chris Evans as Lloyd Hansen, and Ana de Armas as Dani Miranda. The movie is based on the first book, but it changes Court’s backstory, his relationship with Fitzroy, and several supporting characters.

The film was directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, with a screenplay by Joe Russo, Christopher Markus, and Stephen McFeely. It’s a big action version of the story, but it doesn’t follow the first book beat for beat.

Netflix later announced a sequel and a spin-off. Its announcement said Ryan Gosling and directors Joe and Anthony Russo would return for the sequel. Since the movie changes a lot from the book, I wouldn’t use it as a substitute for reading the series.

About the Gray Man Series

The Gray Man series is also called the Court Gentry series. Court is a former CIA operative who becomes one of the world’s most dangerous assassins after he’s burned by his own side.

Greaney writes the series as globe-spanning action thrillers, but the appeal is Court himself. He’s lethal, isolated, and constantly forced to decide who deserves his loyalty.

The books move through international missions, old CIA secrets, private military players, intelligence agencies, and shifting alliances. That’s why the series works best when you follow Court from the beginning.
