Jack Ryan Books in Order of Publication

This first list follows the publication order of the full Ryanverse. That means it includes both the main Jack Ryan books and the Jack Ryan Jr. books, since the two series overlap and build on the same larger world.

This is also the reading order we recommend for most new readers. Publication order gives you the clearest progression of the characters, politics, and major events across the full series.

Jack Ryan Adaptations

Jack Ryan has been adapted for both film and television, with several different actors taking on the role over the years. Here’s a look at the film adaptations:

On television, John Krasinski starred as Ryan in Prime Video’s Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, which ran for four seasons and ended in 2023.

The franchise is also still active on screen. Prime Video followed the series with Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War, a feature film continuation starring John Krasinski, Wendell Pierce, and Michael Kelly. It is set to premiere on May 20, 2026.

Who is Jack Ryan?

Jack Ryan is the main character in this hugely successful franchise. When the series begins, Ryan is a former U.S. Marine and stockbroker who becomes a history teacher at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

Ryan later works for the CIA as an analyst and field officer, before eventually rising to the position of Deputy Director. Over the course of the series, Ryan serves as National Security Advisor and Vice President, and then as the President following a terrorist attack on the White House.

Ryan then went on to spend two non-consecutive terms and mostly dealt with international problems in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Africa.

Jack Ryan Books FAQ

Are Jack Ryan books standalone?

Not really. Individual novels have their own main conflict, but the books are better treated as a connected series. Penguin Random House presents A Jack Ryan Novel and A Jack Ryan Jr. Novel as separate ordered series, and its Jack Ryan series description explicitly frames the books as following Ryan from his CIA years through his presidency.

Is Without Remorse part of the Jack Ryan series?

Yes, but it’s best described as part of the wider Ryanverse rather than a main Jack Ryan novel. Penguin Random House places Without Remorse in its separate John Clark Novel series, and both PRH and Tom Clancy materials describe it as the story that shows how John Kelly became CIA operative John Clark.

Is Rainbow Six part of the Jack Ryan series?

Yes, it belongs to the same universe, but it’s primarily a John Clark book rather than a main Jack Ryan-led novel. Penguin Random House places Rainbow Six in the John Clark Novel series, and Tom Clancy’s official site says the book centers on John Clark as the head of Rainbow.

Are Jack Ryan Jr. books part of the main Jack Ryan series?

They’re part of the same broader universe, but they’re now marketed as a separate line. Penguin Random House and Tom Clancy’s official site both maintain distinct series pages for Jack Ryan Novels and Jack Ryan Jr. Novels, with the Jack Ryan Jr. books focused on Jack Jr. and The Campus.

Who is John Clark in the Jack Ryan books?

John Clark is one of the most important recurring figures in the Ryanverse. Tom Clancy’s official character page describes him as one of the CIA’s most effective field operatives and notes that he later led Rainbow Six with Ding Chavez, while Without Remorse serves as his origin story.
