Looking for the Dog Man books in order? Start with Dav Pilkey’s main graphic novel series in publication order. That’s the simplest reading order for kids, parents, teachers, and anyone trying to figure out which book comes next.
This guide lists the main Dog Man books first, including officially announced future titles once they have a confirmed place in the series. After that, I’ve separated out the Cat Kid Comic Club spin-off, activity books, Captain Underpants connection, and movie info so you don’t accidentally mix extras into the main reading order.

Dog Man Books in Publication Order
The best way to read Dog Man books in order is by following publication order. The main series moves forward naturally from book to book, so there’s no separate chronological list or complicated alternate reading path to worry about.
Each book has its own fast-moving adventure, but the characters, friendships, villains, and running jokes build as the series goes. Publication order keeps all of that in the right place.

Dog Man Spin-Offs, Activity Books, and Extras
Most readers should stick with the main Dog Man series above. That’s the actual story order.
The biggest spin-off is Cat Kid Comic Club. It follows Li’l Petey, Molly, Flippy, and the baby frogs as they learn how to make comics. It’s still part of Pilkey’s Dog Man world, but it feels less like a superhero adventure and more like a very weird, very funny comic-making class.
You don’t need to read Cat Kid Comic Club to understand the main Dog Man books. However, it’s the best next stop for kids who want more of Pilkey’s characters, humor, and comic-book chaos. For the full spin-off list, use my Cat Kid books in order guide.
There are also sticker books, coloring books, journals, boxed sets, and movie tie-in books. Boxed sets usually just collect books from the main series, so I wouldn’t count them as separate reading-order entries. The extras below are better treated as bonus books for fans.
- Dog Man: Guide to Creating Comics in 3-D
- Dog Man Paw-Some Journal
- Dog Man with Love: The Official Coloring Book
- The Art of DreamWorks Dog Man
- Dog Man: Official Sticker Book
- Dog Man: Official Supa Buddies Sticker Book
- Dog Man Saves the Day (Colorforms Activity Book)
Do You Need to Read Captain Underpants First?
No, you don’t need to read Captain Underpants before starting Dog Man. Dog Man began as a comic created by George and Harold inside the Captain Underpants books, but the Dog Man series works on its own.
That said, kids who enjoy Pilkey’s humor may also want to read the Captain Underpants books in order, especially if they want to see where Dog Man’s comic-book origins came from.
Is There a Dog Man Movie?
Yes. DreamWorks Animation released the Dog Man movie in 2025. Peter Hastings directed the film, and the voice cast includes Pete Davidson, Lil Rel Howery, Isla Fisher, Poppy Liu, Stephen Root, Billy Boyd, and Ricky Gervais.
The movie doesn’t replace the book order. If your kid watched the movie first and now wants to read the series, start with the original Dog Man and go from there.
What Is the Dog Man Series About?
Dog Man is a children’s graphic novel series about a crime-fighting hero who is part dog and part man. The series technically spins out of Captain Underpants, but it quickly becomes its own thing, with its own heroes, villains, jokes, and surprisingly sweet moments.
The story begins after Officer Knight and his police dog Greg are badly injured in an explosion caused by Petey, the evil cat. To save them, doctors attach Greg’s head to Officer Knight’s body, creating Dog Man.
From there, Dog Man fights crime, chases Petey’s schemes, and eventually teams up with characters like Li’l Petey and 80-HD. The books are silly and chaotic in the way Pilkey fans expect, but they also keep circling back to friendship, empathy, kindness, and choosing to do good.
