Colleen Hoover Books in Order: Complete List & Reading Order

Colleen Hoover became one of the biggest names in online book culture for a reason. Whether you’ve already read one of her novels and want to know what comes next or you’re just getting started, this guide breaks down all of the Colleen Hoover books in order.

A lot of Hoover’s appeal comes from the emotional intensity of her stories. Her books lean into love, heartbreak, complicated relationships, and messy personal choices, and much of her success grew through reader word-of-mouth in online book communities. It Ends with Us helped introduce her work to a much wider audience, but it’s far from the only title readers keep coming back to.

Where to Start with Colleen Hoover Books

Most Colleen Hoover books are standalones, so you don’t need to start in strict publication order. It Ends with Us is the most common starting point, but it’s also one of her heavier books. Readers who want something darker usually start with Verity, while Ugly Love, Reminders of Him, and November 9 are also easy places to jump in.

For the connected books, just start with the first title in each series: Slammed, Hopeless, Maybe Someday, and It Ends with Us. So really, the best place to start depends on whether you want romance, something darker, or one of her smaller series.

Colleen Hoover’s books are easy to break into two groups: connected series and standalones. Some of her stories follow the same characters across multiple books, while others are completely self-contained and can be read on their own.

Slammed Series

The Slammed series centers on Layken and Will, beginning with their first meeting after Layken’s move to Michigan. From there, the story grows into a romance shaped by grief, family pressure, and the challenges of building a life together.

  1. Slammed (2012)
  2. Point of Retreat (2012)
  3. This Girl (2013)

Hopeless Series

These books start with Sky and Dean, then widen into a larger connected story world. Along the way, Hoover adds companion novels, a novella, and later follow-up books tied to characters introduced in the original series.

  2. Losing Hope (2013)
  3. Finding Cinderella (2013) (Novella)

Built around music, attraction, and complicated timing, this series follows Sydney, Ridge, and the people around them. The books all connect through the same central relationships, with one novella filling in part of the larger story.

  1. Maybe Someday (2014)
  2. Maybe Not (2014) (Novella)
  3. Maybe Now (2018)

It Ends with Us Series

Standalone Books

Most of Colleen Hoover’s catalog falls outside her series. These novels cover romance, family conflict, grief, suspense, and darker relationship drama, but each one tells a self-contained story.

Colleen Hoover Adaptations

Colleen Hoover’s books have already made a real jump to the screen. The first adaptation was Confess, which became a seven-episode series in 2017 starring Katie Leclerc and Ryan Cooper. Then It Ends with Us became her first feature film adaptation in 2024, with Blake Lively as Lily Bloom, Justin Baldoni directing and co-starring as Ryle Kincaid, and Christy Hall writing the screenplay.

More adaptations followed pretty quickly. Reminders of Him followed through Universal and opened on March 13, 2026, led by Maika Monroe and Tyriq Withers.

The next Hoover adaptation on the schedule is Verity. Amazon MGM’s film version of her 2018 psychological thriller is set for release on October 2, 2026, with Michael Showalter directing and Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, and Josh Hartnett in the cast. So at this point, Hoover’s screen history includes one series, three released films, and one more major adaptation already dated.

Who is Colleen Hoover?

Colleen Hoover is a #1 New York Times bestselling author who took a pretty unusual path into publishing. She started writing her first book at 31, and her debut novel, Slammed, was self-published in 2012 after she uploaded it so her mother could read it on an e-reader. What started almost by chance quickly took off through word-of-mouth and launched the rest of her career.

Her books move across contemporary romance, new adult, young adult, and psychological thriller, but they tend to come back to the same emotional core: family, friendship, change, love, and heartbreak. Hoover also won the Goodreads Choice Award for Best Romance three years in a row with Confess, It Ends with Us, and Without Merit, and she lives in Texas with her husband and three sons.
