Alex Cross Books in Order: Full Reading Order & Spin-Offs

The Alex Cross series by James Patterson is one of those rare thrillers that’s been running so long it has its own eras, with Alex’s career, family life, and ongoing relationships changing in ways that actually matter from book to book. Reading the Alex Cross books in order gives you the cleanest throughline, because recurring villains, long-term consequences, and Cross’s personal life don’t reset between cases.

This guide lays the series out in a clear, spoiler-conscious way so you can start in the right place and keep going without accidentally jumping past major character turns. Whether you want the full experience from the beginning or you’re trying to find a smart entry point that won’t ruin earlier books, this will keep you on track.

Other Alex Cross Books

In addition to the books above, there are also two books that fall slightly outside the scope of the main series. We’ve included those books here. You can read these according to the publication order of all Alex Cross books, but these books aren’t meant to pick up where the previous book in the series left off.

  1. Alex Cross’s Trial (2009)
  2. Merry Christmas, Alex Cross (2013)

BookShots

There are also two BookShots featuring Alex Cross. A BookShot is a novella within the series, making both of these very quick reads.

If you are looking to slot these novellas into a chronological Alex Cross timeline, Cross Kill and Detective Cross should be read back-to-back and in that order after you finish Cross the Line and before reading The People vs. Alex Cross. Cross Kill will contain spoilers for Cross the Line.

  1. Cross Kill (2016)
  2. Detective Cross (2017)

Ali Cross Spin-Off Series

James Patterson has also begun a spin-off series from Alex Cross. This series, Ali Cross, only has three books so far, but it follows Alex Cross’s son, Ali, who wants to follow in his father’s footsteps. This is a middle-grade mystery series.

  1. Ali Cross (2020)
  2. Ali Cross: Like Father, Like Son (2021)
  3. Ali Cross: The Secret Detective (2022)

What Is the Best Alex Cross Book?

Most readers would point to Along Came a Spider as the best Alex Cross book. It’s the novel that introduced the series, it remains one of the most well-known entries, and it’s still the book most often recommended as the best place to start.

That doesn’t mean every reader will agree. Long-running series like Alex Cross usually have a few fan favorites, and later books connect better for readers who already know the characters and formula. The People vs. Alex Cross is one example of a later entry that stands out because it flips the usual setup and puts Cross himself at the center of the case in a different way.

Even so, Along Came a Spider is still the safest answer for most readers. It’s the strongest starting point, one of the most recognizable books in the series, and the clearest baseline for deciding which Alex Cross books you enjoy most.

Alex Cross Adaptations

Alex Cross has been adapted for both film and television. The character first reached the screen in Kiss the Girls in 1997, with Morgan Freeman playing Alex Cross alongside Ashley Judd and Cary Elwes. Freeman returned as Cross in Along Came a Spider in 2001, making those two movies the original Alex Cross film run. The books were adapted out of order, though, since Along Came a Spider was the first Alex Cross novel but the second film.

The series was then rebooted in 2012 with Tyler Perry starring in Alex Cross. That film also featured Matthew Fox as Picasso and Rachel Nichols as Monica Ashe. It was positioned as the start of a new run, but it remained a one-film reboot rather than launching a longer movie series.

Alex Cross has also been adapted for television in Cross, the Prime Video series starring Aldis Hodge. Unlike the earlier movies, the show is not a straight adaptation of one specific book and instead draws from Patterson’s characters and world more broadly. Season 1 premiered in November 2024, Season 2 followed in February 2026, and Prime Video has already renewed the series for Season 3.

Who is Alex Cross?

Alex Cross is the central character in most of the books in the series. He’s a Washington, D.C., homicide detective and psychologist, and that combination gives the books their signature mix of criminal investigation and psychological profiling. James Patterson’s official series page describes Cross as a brilliant psychologist who works with both the FBI and DC Metro Police.

As the series develops, Cross works in more than one professional role, but his intelligence, empathy, and investigative instincts remain at the center of the books. His family life is also a major part of the series, especially his relationship with Nana Mama, the grandmother who raised him, along with his children and longtime friend John Sampson.

Alex Cross Books FAQ

Which Alex Cross book should I read first?

Start with Along Came a Spider. James Patterson’s official page describes it as the novel that launched the bestselling detective series, which makes it the clearest starting point for most readers.

Are Alex Cross books standalone?

Each Alex Cross book has its own central case, but the series works best when read as a connected set of novels. Patterson’s official series pages present Alex Cross as an ongoing series, and later books clearly build on earlier ones, including Return of the Spider, which is officially described as a companion novel to Along Came a Spider.

Is Return of the Spider a sequel to Along Came a Spider?

Yes. James Patterson’s official description calls Return of the Spider a companion novel to Along Came a Spider, so it’s directly tied to the first Alex Cross book rather than just being another unrelated later entry in the series.

Are Ali Cross books part of the Alex Cross series?

They’re connected, but they’re not the same series. Patterson’s official site gives Ali Cross its own separate series page, and the descriptions identify Ali as Alex Cross’s son, which makes those books a spinoff rather than part of the main adult Alex Cross run.

Are Alex Cross books still being written?

Yes. The series is still active. James Patterson’s official Alex Cross pages list recent entries such as The House of Cross, Return of the Spider, and Cross and Sampson, with Cross and Sampson released in February 2026.
