Science Fiction Book FAQ

Where should I start if a universe has multiple “entry points”?

Start with the cleanest on-ramp, not the earliest timeline book. In big universes, the “right” first book is usually the one written to introduce new readers—then you can branch into prequels, side eras, and deeper lore once you’re invested.

Do I need to read every single book in a shared universe (Star Wars / Warhammer / Halo)?

No—and trying to is how people burn out. Most shared universes are built in arcs (a specific era, cast, or storyline), and you can treat them like mini-series: pick one arc, finish it, then decide if you want more.

What’s the deal with canon changes, reboots, and retcons?

Sci-fi franchises get revised all the time. The safest approach is to follow a guide that’s organized by the current accepted continuity (or clearly labels what belongs to which continuity), so you don’t accidentally mix incompatible timelines.

Omnibuses and “expanded” versions: do they change the reading order?

Typically no. Omnibuses just bundle books; new editions might add a short story or bonus chapter, but the core order stays the same. If a bonus story matters for continuity, it’s usually best read where it originally appeared in publication order.
