4 Debut Fantasy Novels to Read in 2017

I love reading a completed series. You can binge read the whole thing in a week if you like. But there’s a certain ethereal feeling experiencing the hype for debut novels. The anticipation, the excitement, the rush of adrenaline when it’s finally in your hands.

2017 has seen the release of some fantastic fantasy novels so far, but what about new authors? I haven’t actually read most of these books yet, but based on their descriptions, here are 4 fantasy debut novels on my “To-Read” list.

2017 Fantasy Debut Novels

Caravel, Fantasy Debut Novel, 2017

1. Caraval by Stephanie Garber

Amazon | Goodreads | Author Website

Good Reads Rating: 3.97 – 34,864 ratings – 8,206 reviews

Caraval is probably one of the most hyped debut fantasy novels for 2017. I was immediately drawn in by the cover (that’s usually my first hook). The premise, Scarlett wanting to see the once-a-year Caraval performance only to finally get it and find out it’s not what she expected, is intriguing.

But maybe more so is the mystery associated with the events. The kidnapping of her sister and the tease that all is not as it seems. Can Scarlett figure it out in time and save her sister?

Wintersong, Fantasy Debut Novels, 2017

2. Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones

Amazon | Goodreads

Good Reads Rating: 3.62 – 9,116 ratings – 2,314 reviews

Wintersong captured my attention through the book’s title and, after I read the synopsis, I quickly added it to my list.

It’s a story of sacrifice, as Liesl offers up herself to the Goblin King to save her kidnapped sister, Kathe. But Liesl finds out she enjoys living with the Goblin King more than her home life as she pursues her passion: music. Difficulty arises when she discovers living underground is killing her and she must choose between her life or her music (or the end of the world as the blurb states).

Frostblood, Elly Blake, Fantasy Debut Novels, 2017

3. Frostblood by Elly Blake

Amazon | Goodreads | Author Website

Good Reads Rating: 3.85 – 5,500 ratings – 1,248 reviews

Frostblood‘s cover and title took me in at first sight. Reading the synopsis I found true love. Ruby possesses the magical powers of fire and heat. She hid her powers from the ruling Frostbloods until her mother is killed and she comes out of hiding, seeking revenge.

This novel has everything I look for in a book. A strong hero, a powerful magical ability, and a driving motivation that thrusts the character forward down a harrowing journey. I can’t wait to read this one, possibly more than those listed above.

The Dark of the Moon, E.S. Bell, Fantasy Debut Novel, 2017

4. The Dark of the Moon by E.S. Bell

Amazon | Goodreads | Author Website

The Dark of the Moon is set to release on August 15th. I am currently reading an ARC of the novel and am loving it. It usually takes me awhile to get into a story and the characters, but I was hooked by Chapter 5. The characters are captivating and the story well-written.

Selena Koren is the world’s most powerful Paladin, but when she angers the god she serves, she is cursed and must follow a dangerous path to find redemption. Sebastian Vaas is the world’s strongest assassin, and he’s tasked with killing Selena. But after he befriends her, will he still complete his mission or betray those who hired him?
