Looking for Robert B. Parker books in order? Parker’s bibliography is bigger than just Spenser, though that’s the series most readers know first. He also created Jesse Stone, Sunny Randall, and the Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch Westerns, plus a few standalones, young adult books, and nonfiction titles.
For Parker, it helps to think by series. Start with the character or setting that interests you most, then read that section from top to bottom. The lists below also include the continuation novels published under the Robert B. Parker name after Parker’s death, since those are part of the ongoing series readers are usually looking for.

Where to Start with Robert B. Parker
The best starting point depends on which side of Parker you want first. Spenser is the classic answer, but Jesse Stone is a great pick if you want a quieter police mystery, and Appaloosa is the clean entry point for his Westerns.
- Start with The Godwulf Manuscript if you want Parker’s signature private-eye series.
- Start with Night Passage if you want Jesse Stone, Paradise, Massachusetts, and a moodier police-chief series.
- Start with Family Honor if you want Sunny Randall, Parker’s Boston private investigator with ties to the larger Parker world.
- Start with Appaloosa if you want the Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch Westerns.
- Start with Wilderness if you want a standalone Parker thriller outside his recurring series.
Robert B. Parker Books by Series
Parker’s series are listed by the publication date of the first book in each series. That keeps the page easy to scan while still separating Spenser, Jesse Stone, Sunny Randall, and the Westerns into the groups readers actually care about.
For each series, start with book one and continue down the list. The continuation novels are included in their series sections, with the continuation author noted when the book was not written solely by Parker.
Spenser Books
Spenser is Parker’s defining character: a Boston private investigator with a sharp mouth, a personal code, and a recurring circle that includes Susan Silverman, Hawk, Quirk, and Belson. This is the core Parker series and the place most readers should start.

Robert B. Parker Other Novels
These are Parker’s novels outside his major recurring-character series. Two of them, Poodle Springs and Perchance to Dream, are Philip Marlowe books connected to Raymond Chandler’s detective fiction.
- Wilderness (1979)

- Poodle Springs with Raymond Chandler (1989)
- Perchance to Dream (1991)
- All Our Yesterdays (1994)

Robert B. Parker Young Adult Books
Parker also wrote a small group of young adult books. Chasing the Bear is the most important for Spenser readers because it looks back at Spenser’s younger years.
- Edenville Owls (2007)
- The Boxer and the Spy (2008)
- Chasing the Bear (2009)
Robert B. Parker Nonfiction and Companion Books
Parker’s nonfiction is easy to overlook because his mystery series dominate the conversation. These books include writing about fitness, his marriage, racing, private-eye fiction, and Boston through Spenser’s world.
- Sports Illustrated Training with Weights with John R. Marsh (1974)
- Three Weeks in Spring with Joan H. Parker (1978)
- Parker on Writing (1985)

Robert B. Parker Short Stories and Related Works
These are not required reading before starting the novels, but they’re useful for a fuller Parker list. I’d treat them as bonus material after you know which series you like.
- Surrogate (1982) – short story
- The Best American Mystery Stories 1997 edited with Otto Penzler (1997)
- The Lineup (2009) – contributor essay about Spenser
- Boston Noir 2: The Classics edited by Dennis Lehane, Mary Cotton, and Jaime Clarke (2012) – includes “Surrogate”
- Spenser: A Mysterious Profile by Ace Atkins (2022)
Robert B. Parker Adaptations
Parker’s books have had a long screen life, especially through Spenser and Jesse Stone. The adaptations do not change the book order, but they’re worth knowing about if you came to Parker from TV or film.
- Spenser: For Hire, the TV series starring Robert Urich as Spenser, aired in the 1980s.
- Several Spenser TV movies followed, including Robert Urich films and later Joe Mantegna films.
- The Jesse Stone TV movies star Tom Selleck and draw from the Jesse Stone books while also building their own screen continuity.
- Appaloosa became a feature film starring Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen.
- Spenser Confidential is a loose adaptation connected to Wonderland, with Mark Wahlberg as Spenser.
About Robert B. Parker
Robert B. Parker was an American crime writer best known for creating Spenser, one of the most influential private investigators in modern mystery fiction. He wrote in a stripped-down style with fast dialogue, short scenes, and characters who cared a lot about personal codes.
Before becoming a full-time novelist, Parker taught at Northeastern University and wrote a doctoral dissertation on the private eye in Hammett, Chandler, and Macdonald. That background matters. Parker wasn’t copying hardboiled fiction by accident. He understood the tradition and then made it lighter, faster, funnier, and more conversational.
That’s also why the series have lasted beyond him. Spenser, Jesse Stone, Sunny Randall, and Virgil Cole all feel different, but they share Parker’s interest in loyalty, competence, friendship, and people trying to behave decently in messy situations.
