Harry Bosch Books in Order: Complete List

Figuring out the Harry Bosch books in order is straightforward once you narrow the list to the novels where Bosch is the main character. Read in publication order, these books let you follow his career from early LAPD cases through the later stages of his life and work.

Created by Michael Connelly, Harry Bosch is one of modern crime fiction’s most popular detectives, known for gritty investigations, strong procedural detail, and a relentless sense of justice.

Harry Bosch Books in Order of Publication

Below are all the Harry Bosch books in publication order, covering only the novels where Bosch is the main character. Reading them this way gives you the clearest view of how his career, relationships, and approach to the job develop from one book to the next.

This list does not include the full Harry Bosch universe, so crossover novels led by other Michael Connelly characters are not included here. Harry Bosch TV Show

Harry Bosch has been adapted for television in two connected series, Bosch and Bosch: Legacy, both starring Titus Welliver. The original Bosch ran for seven seasons, and Bosch: Legacy continued the story for three more, with its final season released in 2025.

The shows stay true to the spirit of Michael Connelly’s books, but they do not follow the novels one at a time in strict publication order. Instead, they pull from different books and blend storylines across seasons, so the TV version works best as its own adaptation rather than a book-by-book retelling.

Harry Bosch Books FAQ

What is the first Harry Bosch book?

The first Harry Bosch novel is The Black Echo. It introduces Bosch at the start of Michael Connelly’s long-running series and is the best place to begin if you want to follow the character’s story from the beginning.

Do you need to read the Harry Bosch books in order?

You can read some Harry Bosch novels on their own, since each book has its own central case, but the series works better in publication order. Bosch’s career, relationships, and the larger shared world all build over time, so reading in order gives you the clearest experience.

Are Harry Bosch and Mickey Haller related?

Yes. Harry Bosch and Mickey Haller are half-brothers, which is one of the biggest connections inside Michael Connelly’s shared universe. That relationship becomes especially important in the crossover books featuring both characters.

Can you read the Harry Bosch books without reading the Mickey Haller or Renée Ballard books?

Yes, you can stick with the Harry Bosch series and still enjoy it. That said, some later Bosch novels overlap with Mickey Haller and Renée Ballard, so reading those connected books can give you extra context once the crossovers start showing up more often.
