The FNAF books in order can look confusing because Five Nights at Freddy’s now includes a novel trilogy, two anthology series, interactive novels, movie novelizations, graphic adaptations, and several reference books. I’ve separated each line below so you can find the right starting point without mixing unrelated continuities.

Scott Cawthon created the franchise, and the books were written with several collaborators across different series. Some lines tell continuous stories, while others adapt existing material or let you choose what happens, so the simplest reading order depends on which type of FNAF book you want.

Five Nights at Freddy’s Original Trilogy

The original trilogy is the simplest place to start if you want a conventional FNAF novel series. Scott Cawthon and Kira Breed-Wrisley wrote all three books, and the story follows Charlie and her friends across one continuous alternate continuity.

I recommend reading all three books in the order above. They tell one continuous story, and each installment depends on events from the previous book.

Fazbear Frights Books in Order

Fazbear Frights is a numbered anthology series. Each volume contains novella-length horror stories, and Volumes 1 through 11 also include installments in the recurring Stitchwraith storyline.

Tales from the Pizzaplex is another anthology line, this time centered on stories connected to Freddy Fazbear’s Mega Pizzaplex. The eight volumes include a recurring epilogue storyline, so I recommend following the numbered order.

The FNAF interactive novels let you make choices and reach different endings. VIP appeared before the numbered series and is sold as Interactive Novel #0, so it belongs first.

I’d start with VIP, then follow the numbered novels. These books do not form one linear sequel sequence. The Week Before is an interactive prequel to the first game, Return to the Pit retells the premise of “Into the Pit,” and Escape the Pizzaplex uses the Security Breach setting.

Five Nights at Freddy’s Movie Novelizations

The movie novelizations adapt the two films and belong to the film continuity. I’d keep them separate from the Charlie trilogy, the anthology books, and the game-related interactive novels.

The Fazbear Frights and Tales from the Pizzaplex graphic collections adapt selected stories only, so they do not replace the complete prose anthologies.

These books cover game lore, characters, strategies, maps, secrets, and other reference material. They are not part of the narrative reading order, but the expanded editions contain meaningful new content rather than simple cover changes.

Counting the original trilogy, Fazbear Frights, Tales from the Pizzaplex, the interactive novels, and the movie novelizations, this guide includes 29 distinct narrative prose titles published through 2026. Graphic adaptations, guidebooks, and optional companion books are counted separately because they either retell existing material or serve a different purpose.

There is no reliable single chronological order that combines every FNAF book. The Charlie novels use their own continuity, the movie novelizations follow the films, the interactive books branch into multiple outcomes, and the anthology series have their own connective material. In my view, keeping those lines separate is much more useful than forcing them into one disputed timeline.

If you are new to the books, I’d start with The Silver Eyes for a conventional novel, The Week Before for a story tied closely to the first game, or Into the Pit for the anthology format. From there, follow the numbered order within the series you chose.

Five Nights at Freddy’s moved from games into fiction with The Silver Eyes, first published in 2015. That novel begins the Charlie trilogy, which takes place in an alternate continuity and continues through The Twisted Ones and The Fourth Closet.
