How I made $8,000 in only 3 months publishing my first book

Okay, now that I have your attention I’ve got a bit of a confession.

I didn’t make $8,000 publishing my first book and it took longer than 3 months.

But wait, wait, wait, don’t exit out of this page yet.

It’s not a lie. I really did bring in $8,000 in only 3 months after my first book published, but there’s more to the story. There always is right?

If you’ll take a bit of a ride with me, I’ll walk you through step-by-step how I published my first novel, how much I made in full transparency, the mistakes I made, and the cost to achieve success.

This is going to take several blog posts to accomplish, so we’re going to start where anyone starts, “at the ve-ry be-gin-ing.” If Sound of Music didn’t start playing through your head, I’m sorry. If that song is now stuck in your head like mine, I’m sorry.

Moving on.

Let’s get started

What do I mean I didn’t make $8,000 and that it took longer than 3 months?

Well my revenue, per Amazon KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) was $8,000 in only three months between April 2018 and June 2018. But more on that later. Let’s talk about why it really took longer first, and we’ll get to the rest later.

I started writing in October of 2016.

“Oh, dear, no wonder it took longer, he’s starting back there.”

No, actually we’re not. Don’t worry, I’m just giving you a full picture of my experience, because every person’s journey with self-publishing is different.

I started writing in October of 2016, but soon life got in the way and the manuscript sat on the shelf with only two chapters finished. Sound familiar?

I don’t know why, but in May of 2017 I started writing again and joined an online critique group to help me hone my writing.

Somewhere along the way I came across Vivien Reis’s YouTube channel about writing. Surprisingly enough, I wrote and published my first book before Vivien, despite me religiously following her writing advice.

(Apparently I wasn’t very interested in mistakes)

All that to say her channel helped me realize I knew nothing about actually publishing and marketing a book once I was done.

Publishing starts before you hit the button

So in July of 2017, I joined some Facebook groups about writing (like 20Booksto50k and SPF Community) and realized I needed to start marketing even though my book wouldn’t end up publishing for 10 months. So in reality, the publication process of my first book started in July 2017 even though it didn’t publish until April of 2018.

That’s what we’re talking about when I said it took longer. Because, quite honestly, everything I did from July 2017 to April 2018 was crucial for the success of my book launch.

And I’m going to walk you through it… in the next post: My $8k Journey – Your Author Website.
